I’ve never been good at managing stress, but it wasn’t until my doctor found that an ulcer was the cause of excruciating stomach pain that I decided to make a lifestyle change. Of course, I worked to reduce the number of stressors in my life-but no amount of hard work and preparation can completely eliminate difficult situations. By working with my doctor, I came to understand that I could reduce my stress levels with one simple trick: breathing.
Obviously, we breathe all day every day-but that doesn’t mean we’re doing it right. After doing my fair share of research, I began to implement various breathing techniques into my daily routine. Some call it meditation, but I simply think of my exercises as time to focus on the simplest of acts.
When I’m breathing deeply, I no longer find it difficult to clear my mind and release the build-up of ten-sion in my back and shoulders. Even a brief five minute break can make all the difference in my ability to handle the stressors of the day.
