Breathing in and out is a simple act that we perform thousands of times a day. But that doesn’t mean we fully understand what breathing does for our bodies. Here are five breathing facts that you may not be familiar with:

Fact #1: Crooked Teeth

Over time, breathing through your mouth can result in crooked teeth. This is because this breathing meth-od (which usually occurs as a result of nasal congestion) can cause your jaw to shrink over time. Needless to say, if you aren’t regularly breathing through your nose, you might want to try a decongestant.

Fact #2: The Body’s CO2 Balance

There is actually an optimal method of breathing when it comes to maintaining your body’s CO2 balance. When you inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth, you mess with your balance, and ulti-mately lose CO2. When this happens, you can hold your breath to increase the CO2 and restore your body’s balance.

Fact #3: Autonomous Abilities

Of all our body’s autonomous abilities, breathing is the only one that we can also control. This means that breathing is regulated by our body, but we can actually change how we do with breathing exercises and techniques.

Fact #4: Mood

Another of our interesting breathing facts is that our mood can impact our breathing, and vice versa. Basi-cally, if we want to change our mood, we can do so by simply changing our breathing.

Fact #5: Dominance

Did you know that when you breathe, you are either left or right nostril dominant? In fact, most days your dominance will change every twenty minutes! This ultimately helps to create balance for the body’s nerv-ous system.
